The Sufi concept of living and dying, as brought to us through Inayat Khan, an Indian mystic who first brought Sufism in an organized form to the West in the early 1900s, is a broad teaching for our particular time. It creates a remarkable accommodation for integrating a variety of concepts from many spiritual, scientific and psychological traditions in a way that repeatedly highlights the common thread of wisdom which courses through them all.  This particular seminar on “Impressions” deals with what might otherwise be called “karma” and “reincarnation.”  It urges us to consider their effect not just on individuals but on humanity, consciousness and the universe as a whole.  Whether one believes in karma or reincarnation, in just “one life, one soul,” or even no soul, this modern conceptualization focuses on the kernel of truth embedded in these seemingly disparate concepts, one which we are now ready to hear and assimilate in our era.

This workshop combines lecture, discussion and experience.  Participants will experience a model of the soul’s journey which makes it more than an intellectual concept.  We will concentrate on how impressions develop, are passed on, continue or are put to rest, and the implications of these.  Exercises and discussion will focus on how one might accentuate positive impressions one may wish to strengthen and diminish those one may wish to extinguish. Relevance of this mystical concept to modern psychology, philosophy and physics will also be addressed.

Previous Sufi seminar and workshop attendance is not necessary.  Please come with an open mind, a small notebook or paper and pencil/pen, and curiosity.  Anyone interested in non-sectarian spirituality and its integration and relevance in modern life is welcome.
